The Youth of Horse Racing: Get to Know Mary Cage

Veronica Gizuk • May 21, 2020

No matter where Mary goes, you'll find her around horses. Mary has just recently returned to Texas after living in Kentucky. You can now find Mary at her home track Lone Star Park but this time with a new job, she is the tracks Marketing Coordinator and because of the current pandemic she is also working as a racing official. Mary also dedicates her time to Nexus Racing Club as she serves on their board as the Member Relations Director.

Marys love for racing started when she was just 8 years old watching Smarty Jones win the Kentucky Derby. Fast forward a few years and Mary had taken her first trip to central Kentucky. After her trip that's when she knew she needed to be involved in horse racing. From then on out Mary hasn't looked back.

Mary started in the media side of racing by launching her own blog when she was just 15 years old. From then on Mary began to receive many different opportunities within the racing industry. Mary's love and passion for racing was not going unnoticed. She soon started receiving media credentials and was covering races but that's not all. Mary was also a writer and a photographer covering big events such as the Breeders' Cup and the Triple Crown. This all sounds pretty cool right? well to Mary it just wasn't enough. She decided when in college she wanted more hands-on experience with the horses, so for a short period of time Mary became a groom at her home track. Shortly after Mary landed herself an internship at Winstar Farm in Kentucky. After her time at Winstar was over Mary still found herself wanting more hands-on experience. Mary went on to work for Graham Motion where she found herself doing a variety of jobs for the team. "Horses are my true love in life, and racing is my passion- there's nothing quite like it." she says.
